2 lbs ground beef
2 lbs ground pork
1 tsp Garlic Powder
1 tsp Onion Powder
1 tsp sweet paprika
1 ½ tsp salt
1 ¼ tsp sugar
½ tsp black pepper
½ cup grated onion
2 cups of cooked rice
2 cloves of grated garlic
2 heads of cabbage
24 oz tomato sauce
45 oz crushed tomatoes
28 oz diced tomatoes
1 ½ tsp Worcestershire sauce
20.5 oz condensed tomato soup
- Prepare the cabbage – Carefully remove the leaves from a head of cabbage, blanch them in boiling water for a few minutes until they soften, then set aside to cool. If you have a large cabbage, you’ll need about 18-20 leaves.
- Prepare the filling:- In a large mixing bowl, combine the ground beef and ground pork. Add the garlic powder, onion powder, sweet paprika, sugar, salt, black pepper, and Worcestershire sauce to the meat mixture. Grate the onion and garlic, then add them to the meat mixture as well. Stir in the cooked rice and mix everything together until it’s well combined.
- Stuff the cabbage leaves – Take a cabbage leaf and place a spoonful of the meat mixture in the center of the leaf. Fold in the sides of the leaf and roll it tightly to form a neat bundle. Repeat for all the leaves.
- Prepare the sauce – In a large saucepan or mixing bowl, combine the tomato sauce, crushed tomatoes, diced tomatoes, and condensed tomato soup. Stir until all the ingredients are well combined, then adjust the seasoning with a bit of salt or sugar to taste.
- Assemble the dish – In a large roasting pan, layer the stuffed cabbage rolls, placing them seam-side down to help them stay rolled. Pour the tomato mixture over the cabbage rolls, making sure they’re all covered. If needed, add a little water to ensure the cabbage rolls are mostly submerged.
- Bake – Cover the pan with aluminum foil and bake at 350°F (175°C) for about 2-2.5 hours. Check occasionally to ensure the rolls are simmering in the sauce and adjust the heat if necessary.
- Serve – After baking, let the Holubky rest for a few minutes before serving. The sauce will have thickened, and the cabbage rolls will be flavorful and tender.
